Agricultural Growth Linkages in Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Delgado, Christopher L.; Hopkins, Jane; Kelly, Valerie A.; Hazell, Peter B.R.; McKenna, Anna A.; Gruhn, Peter; Hojjati, Behjat; Sil, Jayashree; Courbois, Claude B..
The wide spread increase in rural purchasing power under the Green Revolution in Asia during the 1970s was key to increased rural employment and industrialization. Studies suggested that an extra dollar of agricultural income was typically associated with an additional $0.80 of nonagricultural income from local enterprises stimulated by the spending of farm house holds. Studies in Africa, where the Green Revolution was harder to discern, tended to be much more pessimistic. This report revisits these issues using especially detailed panel data sets on rural consumption and incomes, collected by IFPRI and collaborating national institutions for a variety of purposes during the mid to late 1980s in Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Results...

Agricultural producer support estimates for developing countries : measurement issues and evidence from India, Indonesia, China, and Vietnam AgEcon
Orden, David; Cheng, Fuzhi; Nguyen, Hoa; Grote, Ulrike; Thomas, Marcelle; Mullen, Kathleen; Sun, Dongsheng.
The levels of support that trade and domestic farm policies afford to agriculture, and the related processes of policy reform intended to improve the economic efficiency of agricultural production, processing, and marketing, are important issues for developing countries. The effects of policy on agriculture are well documented for wealthy countries, especially by the established and respected studies from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. However, systematic analysis is often lacking for poor countries because of the difficulty and cost of measuring policy effects consistently over time and across commodities. This study contributes to filling the existing research gap by examining the impacts of agricultural policies and policy...

Determinants of agricultural policies in the United States and the European Community AgEcon
Petit, Michel.
Agricultural policies pursed by the Unites States and the European Community have had and are likely to continue to have a dramatic impact on international ,markets for Agriculture products. And the stakes of developing countries in these policies are enormous. Thus it is only fitting that an international research institute dealing with food policy should analyze such policies. The International Food Policy Research Institute has published several studies examining aspects of developed-country actions and policies having a powerful influence on food policy environment of developing countries. These have included restrictions on entry to their own markets, the Agricultural export potential of developing countries, and the effects of European Community...

Economic Incentives and Comparative Advantage in Indonesian Food Crop Production AgEcon
Gonzales, Leonardo A.; Kasryno, Faisal; Perez, Nicostrato D.; Rosegrant, Mark W..
Recognizing that the green revolution has resulted in considerable success in production of rice and wheat in many Asian countries, which are now self-sufficient or surpluses in these cereals, IFPRI believes that further growth in agriculture will rely on the productivity of these countries to diversify their agricultural production, while improving productivity in cereals through management and human capital-intensive increase in yield levels. Indonesia is an important example of a country where policy successes in rice production combined with other domestic and world developments in the economic environment of agriculture encouraged policymakers to consider agricultural diversification policies. Key developments leading to an increased interest in...

Government expenditures on agriculture in Latin America AgEcon
Elias, Victor Jorge.
Government expenditure is primarily determinant of the pace and pattern of agricultural growth. The size of government allocations to agriculture is an important indicator of government commitment to agricultural growth. How the resource are allocated is an important determinant of the efficiency of agriculture growth. Despite the central role of government expenditure little comparative analysis has been made of its size, its allocation, and its effect on agricultural production. As a result, there has been little pressure to develop an adequate data base for such requisite data discourages initiation of such analysis. In the research reported her Victor Elias concentrates on developing an adequate data base for analyzing government expenditures on...

Scale and access issues affecting smallholder hog producers in an expanding peri-urban market: southern Luzon, Philippines AgEcon
Costales, Achilles; Delgado, Christopher L.; Catelo, Maria Angeles; Lapar, Ma. Lucila A.; Tiongco, Marites M.; Ehui, Simeon K.; Bautista, Anne Zillah.
Research has shown that gainful participation in livestock markets is an important means of reducing poverty in developing countries, particularly for rural and periurban households. The rapid growth in demand for meat and milk, along with the corresponding expansion of livestock markets to connect consumers and suppliers, presents real opportunities for smallholders to generate income by raising livestock. Nevertheless, the structural changes associated with increasing urbanization taking place in these markets, the greater integration between domestic and global markets, and the emergence of a more stringent regulatory environment also present significant threats to participation by poor households. Further, as the market for livestock products rapidly...

Strategies for Sustainable Land Management and Poverty Reduction in Uganda AgEcon
Nkonya, Ephraim M.; Pender, John L.; Jagger, Pamela; Sserunkuuma, Dick; Kaizzi, Crammer; Ssali, Henry.
Poverty reduction is one of the overarching objectives of most of Sub-Saharan Africa and other low-income countries. Accordingly, one of IFPRI’s major research themes focuses on policies and strategies for poverty reduction. This research report contributes knowledge to that theme. It also contributes to IFPRI’s ongoing investigation of policies and strategies that foster broad-based and environmentally sustainable agricultural and rural development. In Uganda, where soil erosion and depletion of soil nutrients are widespread, land degradation is a major cause of declining productivity and increasing poverty. In this study, Ephraim Nkonya and his colleagues measure the relative merits of various household income strategies and land management practices in...

The role of agriculture in development : implications for Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Diao, Xinshen; Hazell, Peter B.R.; Resnick, Danielle; Thurlow, James.
Thinking on development has long held that agricultural growth is an important step toward economic development and transformation. However, the new challenges facing African agriculture in today’s more globalized environment have led some to question whether conventional wisdom about the role of agriculture in development is still applicable to Africa. There is a shift in emphasis toward nonagricultural growth opportunities, which has the potential to reshape the development strategies of many African countries over the coming decades. This research report critically examines conventional wisdom and contemporary skepticism. It also develops a country typology reflecting the diversity of conditions across the subcontinent and then examines the role of...
